Walking for a Cure:  Yorker Completes Komen 3-Day® in Boston

(York PA) -  When her sister asked her to walk at the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® in Boston, York native Sandy Haynes immediately said yes without thinking twice about it.  Alongside her sister, a breast cancer survivor, and a longtime friend, the three formed “Poppy’s Girls” and embarked on one unforgettable journey.

Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Getting straight to work, the trio began fundraising through various outlets, including a wine tasting at a local vineyard, complete with relabeled bottles of wine showcasing the team name.  Directly affected by the issue, Haynes walked because she knows firsthand the impact cancer has on life.  “I walked for my mother, a victim, my sister, a survivor, for myself, a fortunate supporter; and, I walked for the cure, so other 16 year old girls don’t have to grow up motherless or a 28 year old woman doesn’t have to make the choice between starting lifesaving treatment and the life of her unborn child.  This was a ‘for lifetime’ experience.”

Gaining support from her family and friends, Haynes also received support from her employer of 11 years, Heritage Hills Resort. Through the “The Legends Continues” at Loxley’s Restaurant in Lancaster, the company supported Sandy’s efforts by selecting Susan G. Komen to be a part of the program (the restaurant donates 5% of the food bill towards the organization of the patron’s choice each month).  “We are a family run business so we know the significance of family. It’s important for us to be able to show our support to our employees and the causes they hold close to their hearts,” said Matt DeRose, General Manager of Heritage Hills Resort.

Haynes, her sister Cyndi Whitehouse and family friend Denise Vaudrin completed the 3-day walk July 26 - 28, 2013.
