Hospitality Mentor Program Gives Students a Jump Start to Their Futures

(York, PA) -  Over the past eight months, local high school students had the opportunity to participate in the Hospitality Mentoring Program presented by Heritage Hospitality Management. The program is marketed to all of the 17 York County School Districts by the York County Alliance for Learning (part of the YCEA) and students are selected by their guidance counselors to apply.

The outline of the program was created and organized by Brandy Meyer, Director of Sales at Heritage Hills Resort.  There are seven sessions from October through May, in addition to a welcome breakfast and a celebratory dinner at the start and completion of the program.  The sessions consist of a guest speaker who presents the particular department they work in within the industry. All of the content was created from scratch by Meyer who wanted to give the kids a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality industry.

“It’s awesome that Brandy does this. Heritage Hills donates the space, the activities and the meals for these students each month,” said Kelsey Dixon, Sales Manager at Heritage Hills Resort.  “I had the pleasure of attending their awards ceremony and the parents and kids were so excited to be in the program. Brandy put a lot of time and effort into this and truly has a vested interest in the future of these kids. They are the future at Heritage.”

The students do this out of their spare time and do not receive a grade or extra credits for their participation.  Wyatt Franks, a senior at Red Lion Area High School, feels that these programs help to have a better understanding as to what it takes to be successful in the industry. “Most students don’t take advantage of these opportunities, but those who do can tell you they’re worth it. Some mentoring programs offer scholarships, internships and even jobs to those who participated.

At the conclusion of this year’s program, an internship opportunity is offered to one deserving student in the program.
