Backyard Football Rivalry Is More than Just a Game

(York, PA) - The 5th annual "Football for Freedom" Classic played between Dallastown and Red Lion will be held on Friday, October 31 at Red Lion High School.

The thought behind the game, played during the high school football season, was to take a classic, conventional rivalry and turn it into something more meaningful.  Thus became the "Football for Freedom Classic," showcasing an awareness of service and patriotism to our country.  Honorary captains are chosen for both Dallastown and Red Lion; they participate in a coin toss at the start of the game and present the traveling trophy to the winning team. All veterans are invited and can attend this game for free.  The National Guard, recruiters and other military personnel will also be in attendance.

Honorary team captains include Adam Lepley (Dallastown) and Perry Nagle (Red Lion).  First Sergeant Adam Lepley is a 1997 graduate of Dallastown and has been in the US Army for 16 years. He has been deployed nine times, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He's been awarded two Bronze Stars, the fourth-highest individual military award that is given for acts of heroism, acts of merit, or meritorious service in a combat zone. He is currently serving at Fort Bragg, NC.

SSgt Perry Nagle entered the military in 1968, completing Basic Training at Andrews AFB, followed by Combat Training.  He spent 366 days at DaNang RVN where he pulled base defense duty on the perimeter as a machine gunner on a bunker.  After returning to the states, Nagle reenlisted and received orders for Vietnam as an 81 mm Mortar NCOIC. En route, his orders changed to Thailand, where he spent a year, followed by two years at Loring AFB, Me.  He spent another year in Turkey where he was a Supervisor before coming back to Dover AFB.  He was dischared in May of 1979.

This year's game is sponsored by Ballyhoo Sports Academy at HHAC, a year round youth sports academy focusing on team sports, character development and sports specific training with experienced coaching and staff. They are located at Heritage Hills Athletic Club, 2810 E. Prospect Road in York.
